Getting outside at dawn in the dark to do things is not an activity I seek out but if you participate in an outrigger canoe club, it is likely to come up.
I am a member of the Kukui’ula Outrigger Club and the Kukui’ula Klassic is our event so it is all hands on deck. The skirts need to be put on the canoes at dawn. What is a skirt? We don’t use skirts when we practice, but skirts are used during races to keep water from splashing in and weighing down the boat.
If the boat “huli’s” (turns over), you have another step to recovery which is to unzip yourself from the canoe.
These are scenes from prepping the canoes for the race on March 17th on Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii.
I sent the event out on Instagram to invite people to come down and watch the race.
